First of all, a "locked" cell phone only recognizes a SIM card from a particular carrier. This "lock" is software that makes sure that only that particular carrier is recognized.

An unlocked cell phone is a GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) cellular phone that has been "unlocked" so that they will work with any SIM (Subscriber Information Module) card that you want to install. This allows you to plug in a different SIM card for different cellular service providers.

Most cell phones that you buy have a unique serial number for that particular phone. This allows the cell phone service provider to know who you are and where to send calls when someone calls your cell phone.

On the other hand, a GSM phone is not linked directly to you. It has a removable SIM with a unique serial number. The serial number in the SIM is what identifies you to the service provider.

Now, all you have to do is install your SIM into any compatible GSM phone and you will be able to use it as your phone. Your wireless provider can find your SIM and doesn't care what phone it's in.

You don't have to be tied to a mediocre phone until death do you part. There are better 'free-range' phones out there, unlocked and ready to run the features you want. But free-range doesn't mean free.

What's an "unlocked" mobile phone? Before the Apple iPhone, it's safe to say that relatively few mobile phone users knew or cared.

An unlocked phone is one that isn't limited to a particular provider's network and has all its features available, just the way it came from its manufacturer. Providers programmatically reconfigure the phone's features. Some of these changes are benign and necessary, like setting defaults for the phone's Web browser. Others are business-driven decisions: phone features like push-to-talk or wireless LAN support are locked out so providers can charge separately for them, or keep customers from using them in favor of other higher-profit options such as high-speed data plans.
When mobile phones were new and novel, locked phones made some sense. The providers had to give away a phone to sign up a new customer, and it seemed that no two providers' network technologies worked alike. But since that Neolithic age, a couple of things have changed: Mobile phone technology has become standardized, and phone makers have responded to a global demand for handsets with a blizzard of devices that offer far more than plain old wireless telephone service.

These days, however, there are some good reasons for owning and using an unlocked phone. You can get features you might not be able to get from your mobile service provider. You can gain coverage, moving your phone from provider to provider, even continent to continent. And you can obtain some independence from mobile service providers -- an industry that, at least in the United States, generally seems dedicated to the idea that the customer is always wrong.

In the early 1990s, most of Europe and Asia adopted the GSM technology. Only in the United States are the major national service providers still fighting the old battles: AT&T/Cingular and T-Mobile operate GSM networks, and Verizon and Sprint operate something else. GSM is an all-digital network, which means that handsets are little computers that automatically support a variety of digital services in addition to digitized voice, including high-speed data transfers for applications like Web browsing and text messaging. GSM operates in the 900- and 1,800-MHz radio-frequency bands in Europe, and the 850- and 1,900-MHz bands in the United States.

All GSM phones depend on a small plastic card with an embedded microchip, called a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) to hold the user account information that identifies the phone to the provider's network. The SIM card makes a phone's personality portable -- swap a SIM and you can put your phone on a different network or, conversely, put a different phone on your network.

This standardization of the mobile network environment around the world (except the United States) has resulted in something like a free market for handset manufacturers. They can sell phones with a seemingly endless variety of features to users, and users can buy phones with exactly the features they want.

IPods have been a great market hit since their appearance in 2001, almost 5 years ago. Since listening to music is one of the favorite activities of today’s individuals, the constant evolution of this device was an important request, so the new product presented a diverse range of new features, accessories and capacities. The iPod evolved from a simple and basic music player to a sum of music player, recorder, and photo viewer and now to a both music and video device.

The most important new feature of the latest generation of iPods, meaning the 5th generation, is the video. The reviews on this item are so far, excellent – the quality of the motion images is great, with almost perfect colors, even when the device is connected to a TV set in order to watch a video. Even more, watching the videos on the actual iPod is possible due to a larger screen, which also allows the high visibility of sharp texts and photos. Still, even though the battery is claimed to last around 20 hours, which is an evolution since the last iPod model, the battery is much rapidly consumed when watching videos.

The range of improvements since the last model of iPod is impressive: the new video iPod comes with a new design, but in the same black and white colors and with a new set of accessories, which range from world clock, smaller earphones and a thinner slipcase to AC adapter and FireWire cable. Will Apple's Next iPhone Have A Plastic Keyboard? No (AAPL)

At some point, it seems likely that Apple (AAPL) will broaden its iPhone lineup to more than one design. But will the company sell an iPhone with a physical keyboard? Are there enough people out there who insist on an iPhone with plastic keys for Steve Jobs to get over his reported hatred of buttons? Anything's possible, but probably not.

In a research note today, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster suggested potential new members in the iPhone "family" he's predicted for months. Example: "Specifically, we believe Apple could introduce a lower-end model that is slightly thicker due to the inclusion of a slider keyboard for students (texting) and business use (email) between $99 and $149," he says.

Munster's prediction that Apple will sell 45 million iPhones in 2009 -- by far the biggest estimate we've seen -- relies heavily on the thought that there will be more iPhone models to choose from. So it's interesting to see what ideas he's basing his projection on. But we're not sold on the slide-out keyboard.

Why might Apple include a keyboard on a future iPhone?

Because there are still some people who insist on a physical keyboard for typing on a smartphone. We expect they'll show up in the comments section of this post.
Some people, like women with long fingernails, can't use an on-screen keyboard comfortably. (Thanks to reader Greg P. for the reminder.)
While Apple's on-screen keyboard gets easier to use over time, it's still not as good as a good physical keyboard, especially for writing long messages.
Even though Apple's typing error correction tool is good, many people aren't confident enough to trust it. Or not as much as they trust typing on a physical keyboard.
Because Apple's most important rivals -- Google (GOOG), RIM (RIMM), Nokia (NOK), etc. -- all offer smartphones with physical keyboards.

Why might Apple not include a keyboard on a future iPhone?

Because it's a waste of bulk and weight -- you don't use it enough to make the tradeoff worthwhile.
Because Apple does what Apple thinks is best, not necessarily what survey respondents want.
Because many iPhone buyers have never owned smartphones with plastic QWERTY keyboards and won't miss them.
Because Steve Jobs hates buttons, even on his clothes, according to a July 2007 Wall Street Journal story.
Because Steve Jobs specifically made fun of smartphones' QWERTY keyboards while unveiling the iPhone at Macworld 2007. See funny video below.

Anything is possible, so we won't rule it out completely. (Apple's designers would probably make a darn good plastic keyboard.) And we'd note that Steve's Macworld speech doesn't specifically reference slide-out keypads, which might be less offensive. (But still too bulky for what they're worth.)

But we don't see Apple selling an iPhone with keyboard buttons any time soon -- we don't think enough people are refusing to buy keyboard-less iPhones to make it worthwhile.

If anything, Apple might want to help accessory companies offer add-on keyboards, gaming pads, etc. But not build them into the phone.

We'd rather see Apple focus on making the on-screen virtual keyboard better -- like fixing bugs that frequently make it slow to respond -- and adding widescreen typing to apps like Mail and SMS.

And then we'd like to see Apple make the existing iPhone cheaper for entry-level buyers -- $99 should be good for now. Price is the iPhone's biggest problem -- not a missing keyboard.

When it comes to New Year's resolutions, we all know how easy it is to see that resolve fade from determination to a distant memory as we shrug it off with a defeated "Oh well, I tried."

But Jedi Master Yoda had it right: "Do or do not. There is no try."

Your iPhone could offer a little hand-held help in really doing it this year. Heck, you might consider your device a changing, er, force (sorry) that could be your greatest tool or fiercest tormentor.

The resolutions themselves haven't changed much over the years. You know the ones: be better with money, get organized, live a healthier lifestyle, become more environmentally conscious, be sure not to break new laws. (OK, so maybe being a law-abiding citizen isn't really on your list, but it should be!)

Here are apps we think are the best to give you a fighting chance in making changes that stick.

1. Managing money: Whether the focus is earning, saving, investing, spending or tracking, money often tops most resolution lists. Mint.com offers a free app that highlights monetary movement (in occasionally frightening detail). After you input some account log-in info online, Mint analyzes where your money is going or has gone: check balances, budgets, transactions and investments.

What sizzles: Seeing your funds in living color and detail can force you into better habits. At a quick glance once the app launched, I learned that red is the thematic color of the month for me -- quite a lovely seasonal match for green, but not in line with my financial plans.

It tracks spending trends. So if you eat out more or buy more clothes this month than last, expect to see it pointed out in the alerts tab.

What fizzles: The only thing missing is a way to lock access from prying eyes. The blessing here is that the app only shows money movement; you can't transfer funds.

Bottom line: Ultimately, I've never been so excited to know where my money is going. For those of us who have no idea where to even start, this app is, well, money.

2. Being more hands-on (the steering wheel): Starting Jan. 1, we Californians are legally prohibited from texting and e-mailing while driving. Sure, in some cars this could lead to twitching thumbs as they deal with wireless withdrawal -- but, however angry and twitchy those thumbs may be, the law will probably help keep more eyes on the road and make for safer driving. If you must communicate, Vlingo is the voice-powered app to tap and talk to. (It's still legal to tap as long as it's not person-to-person communication. Check out this Q&A with California Highway Patrol for more details about the new law.)

What sizzles: Vlingo learns your speech patterns and actually can learn words or names that you use regularly. Results pop up fairly quickly. While the voice search on Google's iPhone app is impressive too, it doesn't seamlessly integrate as many functions as Vlingo does. With it, you can call from your contact list, search Google or Yahoo, find locations on Google Maps and update your Facebook or Twitter status.

What fizzles: It takes one more step than it should to get directions to a location.

Bottom line: The design of the app is driver-friendly. From the home tab, the button you tap to trigger the voice-recognition is fat. So your thumb, however svelte or thick, can't miss it even if you aren't looking.

3. Getting organized: Every year, so many of us promise to unclutter and inventory all the stuff in our homes and lives.

Once you've done the out-with-the-old portion of the exercise, you can log the keepers with the iOwn app. The price recently dropped to $2.99, and there's a free version.

What sizzles: It walks you through the kinds of information you should hang on to with its four existing templates. You can create your own for items that don't fit, such as wine. And there's no limit to the number of locations, rooms and items. So you're set whether you have a studio or 12 homes.

If you're nervous about walking around with all the details of your belongings in your hand, you can add a passcode to keep the casual peeper from easily discovering what you've got where.

And because our devices can walk away, having a backup that doesn't is important. (Isn't that why we do the inventory in the first place?) The iOwn Backup feature requires you to create an online account for your data to be stored. That way you can access your data from any device with the app. You get five years of 100 megabytes of storage with the app, and you can set up as many devices as you'd like with the backup. So spouses can have the same information on separate devices.

What fizzles: What happens after five years? And it'd be great to be able to create a hard copy for filing away in the lock box.

Bottom line: A solid app for creating a database of your valuables.

4. Getting fit: This goal is perpetually on so many resolution lists, whether it translates into exercise more or weigh less. The App Store has a host of health and fitness applications that could fit your specific needs, and many of them are free (such as the Calorie Tracker from Livestrong.com, Lose It and iMapMyRun apps). Then there's Weight Watchers Mobile, which is a decent mobile version of its program -- and you can add a link to your home screen for quick launching.

But honestly, nothing has completely bowled me over with all the components of a fitness application for iPhone. They are either food diaries that allow you to note that you've worked out or workout diaries that indicate you had a bite to eat.

One app I have found universally useful for an old pro at the health-and-fitness resolution is iShape.

What sizzles: When you launch the program, you answer a few questions about height, weight, age and weight goal. The app lets you log your eating and exercise habits as well as your weight.

Its food database allows you to select from what's there or exercise a bit of control by adding your own items. Based on what you tap in, the app will analyze your intake of the kinds of nutrients you're ingesting. You can also set weekly weight-loss goals.

As inspiration (or humiliation), you can add your own "before" picture -- and, when you reach your goal, an "after" photo. (And, yes, you can password-protect the app.)

One of the nicer features is the ability to export the data you're gathering. You can e-mail it as a PDF file. There's also an option for those of us who track "points" rather than calories.

What fizzles: It supposedly offers the ability to download foods and exercises, but I didn't see anything there to download. This feature depends on the kindness of strangers -- so, it's like the Napster approach to food and fitness information. But that take-and-give approach works only if others are in the sharing mood.

Bottom line: For 99 cents, it's filled with a lot of helpful features to help your physical bottom line. It's got room for growth.

5. Going green: Becoming more environmentally savvy seems to be in fashion. The GoodGuide app can help you navigate through the labels, ingredients and impact of more than 65,000 toys, personal care and household products. This guide grades products on their major impacts to human health, the environment and society.

What sizzles: Since we initially reviewed GoodGuide in our going green roundup, it has added a toys category: a catchall for just about anything your kids might get their hands (or mouths) on. A nice tool for parents who have enough trouble keeping up with little Leela or Lawrence.

When you launch the app, it lists two highly rated products with their ratings. If you tap a product, you get details of what the rating really means and which ingredients to avoid. You can look up more stuff by category (say, household cleaners) or by brand. The app links to an iPhone-optimized version of the main site for additional info.

You can create shopping and "avoid" lists as well as share the ratings with others via e-mail.

What fizzles: With the number of product recalls, it could be interesting to include that information, particularly in the "toys" category. It's not really the core mission of the app, but there is a connection.

Bottom line: If you buy the notion of being green, it's helpful to be armed with some info.

Turn Any MP3 into an iPhone Ringtone

Back when I was a Palm Centro owner, I used the excellent freeware app Min iTones to turn Brendan Benson's "Spit It Out" into my ringtone. But when I upgraded to an iPhone, I discovered that iTunes charges 99 cents for ringtones--even if you already own the song.

My cheapskate nature doesn't allow for that. (It's not the money, it's the principle of the thing.) So I decided to "roll my own" iPhone ringtone, which turned out to be a fairly easy process.

Start iTunes and find the song you want to convert. (It must be an MP3.)
Right-click the song and choose Get Info.
Click the Options tab.
Check the Start Time and Stop Time boxes, then enter times for each (no more than 30 seconds apart, the maximum length for a ringtone). I used 0:00 and 0:30, respectively, as "Spit It Out" has a perfect ascending lead-in.
Click OK, then right-click the song again and choose Create AAC Version. You should immediately see a new 30-second version of the song.
Drag that version out of iTunes and into the folder of your choice.
Delete the 30-second version from iTunes and undo the Start Time/Stop Time changes to the original.
Open the folder containing the 30-second AAC file you dragged out of iTunes, then change the file extension from .m4a to .m4r. Double-click it and it immediately gets added to iTunes' ringtone library.
Finally, sync your iPhone. When it's done, you can head into the settings and select your new ringtone.

Five top tips for new iPhone users

If it turned out that the big lump at the bottom of your stocking wasn’t in fact coal, but rather a happy, shiny new iPhone 3G, then, like most new iPhone owners, the thing’s probably rarely left your clutching grasp. But though you may be surfing the web, checking your e-mail, even looking up directions on Maps, there are a few features that you might have missed in your initial excitement. Let us help you fill in the gaps with these top tips.

Pick a letter, any letter: The iPhone’s onscreen keyboard takes some getting used to, but it’s also incredibly versatile, supporting more than 20 different languages. Sometimes you don’t need a whole different alphabet, though—maybe you just need to be able to spell François or Mötley Crue. No worries, the iPhone’s got you covered: to insert one of those special characters, just hold down the base letter for a couple seconds (for example, to get ö, hold down the ‘o’ key) and you’ll see a menu of special characters pop up. Slide your finger to the right one, let go, and presto, you’re all set. Bonus tip: this technique also works with the “.com” key that you see when typing in a web address in Safari—hold it down and you’ll get options for .org, .net, and .edu too.

There’s no place like home: The Home button is one of the iPhone’s few physical buttons; it’s also your best friend, because it’s always there for you. Clicking it will quickly jump you back to the home screen, whether you’re in an app or paging through your sixth screen of iPhone applications. If you visit Settings -> General -> Home Button, you can choose to have a double-click of the button bring up the Favorites screen of your Contacts, or pop up a dialog box with iPod controls. And if you’re trapped in a frozen or hung application, you can often escape by holding down the Home button for around six seconds.

Take a picture, it’ll last longer: Maybe there’s some information on your iPhone you want to be able to retrieve later, like flight information, or perhaps you want to share that data with somebody else. Some programs, like Safari, let you email information to others, but many don’t. There is a workaround, though: take a screenshot. If you push the iPhone’s Home button and Sleep/Wake button simultaneously, the screen will flash to white and a screenshot of whatever you’re looking at will appear in your iPhone’s Photos app. From there you can attach the image to an e-mail message or just save it for future reference.

Shake it up, baby: You’re going to spend a lot of time on the iPhone’s home screen, so just like your actual home, you’ll probably want to arrange it to your liking. By tapping and holding any application icon on the home screen, all the icons will jiggle like they've caught a bad case of dance fever. In this mode, you can drag-and-drop icons wherever you like; if you drag them to the edge of the screen, you’ll shift to the adjacent page. You can even drag icons in and out of the iPhone’s dock, if you want to have quick access to an application no matter what home screen you’re on. While the icons are shaking, you can also remove any third-party apps (those that don’t come with the iPhone) by tapping the little ‘x’ that appears in the top left corner. When you’ve got everything set up just the way you want it, tap the Home button to lock it in.

The tip that keeps on tipping: That third-party application you downloaded would be great if only it just let you change that one little setting that's driving you nuts, but you can't find a preferences option anywhere in the program. That's because Apple's developer documentation asks programmers, rather unintuitively, to put their applications' settings in the iPhone's Settings app. Not all developers do Apple's bidding, but it's a good idea to check the Settings app before complaining to the program's creator that something's totally impossible.

Bluetooth Definition

Bluetooth is a specification for the use of low power radio communications to wireless phones, computers, and other network wireless devices over short distances. The name Bluetooth is actually borrowed from Harald Bluetooth, a Denmark king more than 1,000 years ago.

The technology of Bluetooth was primarily designed to support simple wireless networking of devices and peripherals, which includes cell phones, PDAs, and wireless headsets. The wireless signals that are transmitted by Bluetooth cover short distances of up to 30 feet, generally communicating less than 1 MPps (Mega Byte per second).

The networks of Bluetooth feature dynamic topology called PAN or a piconet. The piconets contain a minumum of two and a maximum of eight peer devices. The devices will communicate using protocols that are part of the specification.

Even though the Bluetooth standard will utilize the same 2.4 GHz range as 802.11b and 802.11g, the technology isn't suitable for a Wi-Fi replacement. When compared to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
is much slower, limited in range, and actually supports less devices.

For short range devices, Bluetooth is rapidly becoming the best. The technology is more popular with cell phones,as Bluetooth headsets are the way to go these days. To use Bluetooth,your cell phone will need to have it enabled,or an infared device somewhere on the phone.

Upcoming devices are utilizing Bluetooth as well, such as PS3 and the Nintendo Revolution. The wireless controllers will be Bluetooth enabled, which will give players the cutting edge. If you own a cell phone or other wireless device, you should look into Bluetooth. The technology
is nothing short of spectacular, making it something that will be around for years and years to come. As technology gets bigger and bigger, you can expect Bluetooth to advance as well.
